New satellites upgrade DMCii global imaging service
29.07.2009

DMCii is pleased to announce the successful launch of next generation DMC imaging satellites UK-DMC2 and Deimos-1. The new satellites increase the DMC imaging capacity twenty-fold and now provide 20 metre optical imagery resolution at the standard DMC 650km swath width, doubling the number of pixels per hectare.

A direct downlink reception service is also now available for customers with compatible ground stations. The two new satellites launched into the DMC satellite constellation on 29th July 2009 ensure data continuity for existing customers and enhance DMCii’s satellite-based imaging services. The service will be further enhanced when two new satellites, NigeriaSat-2 and NigeriaSat-X, are launched in 2010.

Science projects win DMC imagery
30.06.2009

DMCii today announces the selection of 5 science projects that will receive free satellite imagery from the DMC satellite constellation.

Greenland GlacierIn December 2008, scientists were invited to compete for the opportunity to use the DMC multi-spectral satellite image data in their research projects.

Applications were judged on their contribution to international environmental research by a panel of scientists chaired by Professor Alan O’Neill, Director of the UK’s National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) the panel included Dr Arwyn Davies, Head of Earth Observation at the British National Space Centre (BSNC), Dr Paul Aplin (Chairman of RSPSoc and Associate Professor Nottingham University), Dr Steve Mackin, Chief Scientist DMCii and David Hodgson, Managing Director DMCii.

The winning projects cover a wide range of important topics: from monitoring changes in the Greenland Ice Sheet and the UK wetlands and forests, to pioneering new techniques for integrating satellite Earth observations with computer models to improve measurements of how the Earth’s vegetation ‘breathes’ carbon dioxide. Congratulations to the following winning science teams:

Monitoring Dynamic Change in the Greenland Ice Sheet
A. Luckman (Swansea University)

Systematic Wide Area Forest Monitoring in IndonesiaIndonesian forests photograph
16.04.2009

DMCii is leading a new project within the European Space Agency (ESA) VAE programme to develop services for systematic wide area forest monitoring. The project supports international demand for new services in global forestry management.

Indonesian forest mapThe project is focused on service needs in Indonesia and working with local stakeholders active in areas including sustainable forest management and certification. Indonesian forests represent the 3rd largest tropical forest area in the world and play an important role in the global carbon cycle.

To deliver the project objectives, DMCii leads a team that includes international experts from Leicester University and the World Resources Institute (WRI). The year long project provides forestry management information products based on high temporal (frequently updated) optical and radar satellite imagery and is one of only 10 projects selected from 140 submissions.

Over 2000 CHRIS images processed since 1st Jan 2008
09.06.2008

In Guildford, UK DMCii staff are responsible for the scheduling and image processing for the CHRIS Hyperspectral instrument onboard the ESA earth orbiting satellite PROBA . In support of the mission the DMCii team has now processed over 2,000 images since 1st January 2008. The PROBA mission was launched in October 2001 and is controlled from Redu, Belgium. PROBA was built by Verhaert for ESA to include the SSTL made CHRIS Hyperspectral instrument.

CHRIS is used to measure biophysical and biochemical data, and information on land surfaces. Multiple images of the same target area under different viewing and illumination geometries are possible. Up to 19 spectral bands can be acquired simultaneously at 20 metres spatial resolution. CHRIS imagery is used by more than 60 Earth observation Principal Investigators from scientific institutes within Europe.

Burma flood imagery from DMC
07.05.2008

DMC imagery taken today by the UK-DMC satellite of Burma (Myanmar) shows the Rangoon (Yangon) area and southern costal regions. DMC imagery acquired of the region is supplied to project managers of the International Charter "Space and Major Disasters" to be processed into information products that determine flood extents. DMCii has also supplied pre-disaster archive imagery to enable comparisons with post-disaster imagery for the production of emergency maps.
