Burn Scars Observed on Mount Vesuvius
On the 12th July, Mount Vesuvius experienced multiple fires which have scorched acres of surrounding woodland.
Large clouds of smoke blew over nearby towns and villages including Naples. A number of people were evacuated from their homes but thankfully no injuries or fatalities were reported.
The fire has destroyed large areas of vegetation which has left areas of exposed volcanic rock.
Vesuvius is the only active volcano in mainland Europe, and has produced some of the continents largest volcanic eruptions.
The animation below shows the extent of the burn scar caused by the raging fires. The imagery was acquired by the DMC Constellation on the 21st July 2017.
